Upwards and Out

It's a curious place for a caterpillar to crawl,
on a ride that goes slow,
as a horse bobs lazily up & down,
traveling in a continuous cycle,
one that loops back to the beginning.
That's where this crawler found themself,
I planted myself in that spot for awhile,
as staying there had become familiar,
& in some ways, an easier way to travel.
But each caterpillar has a choice,
to continue to idly loop,
or to climb off the uncomplicated ride,
& I am living that decision everyday,
inching toward a different route.
No more meandering towards nowhere.
I hope to find myself,
this time, in a circle, upward bound,
as some paths mirror a spiral staircase.
I could build my cocoon there,
eventually hatching, wings craving flight,
finding my own way, upwards & out,
in the direction the sunflowers grow,
shifting to the sun, absorbing the light.
My hope is to not be found in time,
as an extinct & ancient fossil buried in dirt,
like the fate of the ocean's ammonite,
& instead once the door to the roof opens,
to be released into the open air,
finally unstuck, blissfully free.
